The Promoting Equal Rights for Women and Girls with Disability (PERD), a non-governmental organization run by Women In Need (WIN) through its humanitarian projects has organized a livelihood skills training program for twenty-one physically challenged women and girls at the Ghana Education Service Development Institute (GESDI) at Saltpond in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana.
The impactful training workshop saw participants put through the production of shower gel, shampoo, bar soap, bleach, liquid soap, bread and pastries.
As part of the training, participants also received Financial Literacy Skills training by Madam Isabella Esantsi a Human Resource specialist and resource person to help them better manage their resources, grow their business and achieve financial independence.
She charged the women to be astute with money and practice savings, book keeping and stock taking amongst other skills acquired to better their lives.
The PERD project sponsored by the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana is a three-year project.
The project is targeted at empowering physically challenged Women and Girls to be abreast with their rights to protect them from Sexual and Gender Based Violence and to make them self reliant.
Areas shortlisted to have benefited so far from the project within the Central Region include the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam district, Gomoa West District and the Mfantseman Municipality.
Meanwhile, WIN has since 2020 been working with other partners such as Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) and African Centre for Human Rights & Sustainable Development (AfCHuRSD) on promoting equal rights and opportunities including livelihood skills for over 1,000 able and disabled Women and Girls.
On the PERD Project, PPAG is implementing in the Ashanti region whilst AfCHuRSD is implementing in the Upper West and Northern regions of Ghana.
The colorful training program on the other hand, was witnessed and graced by representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Ghana Enterprise Agency from all three implementing districts.
