Nana Kwesi Mensah lll, Chief of Kwaprow, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region has rubbished claims that he and his Assemblyman, Hon. John Kilson Mensah have been convicted for contempt by the Cape Coast High Court after an issued death threat to a lawyer of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) following a longstanding land dispute with the university.
Kwaprow and UCC have for some time now been in the news over the ownership of some 400 hectares of land in the area.
Reports had it that the Chief and his Assemblyman have been convicted following a leveled contempt of court offense which subsequently saw them being fined GH¢6,000 each by the Cape Coast High Court over their gross misconduct against one Solomon Faakye (Esq), the Head of Legal Affairs for UCC on October 11, 2022, after unlawfully forcing themselves into his office to threaten him.
Speaking to Sompa TV/FM's Eric Annan, Nana Kwesi Mensah dismissed the claim of ever being sent to prison over his community's land tussle with UCC as earlier publications suggested.
He confirmed the occurrence of himself and the Assemblyman going to the lawyer's office some months past after noticing UCC to be serving residents of his community, perceived to have encroached lands belonging to the university with court sermons after a directive by the lands commission to have the school revoke such sermons upon its introduction into their land dispute for a thorough investigation to be conducted.
An action he recounted to appear unpleasant before the court hence cited them for contempt and charged them to the tune of GH¢12,000 with each having to pay GH¢6,000 which they instantly settled during the court's recent hearing on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, for their actual land case with the university before the court to proceed.
Nana Kwesi Mensah questioned the legitimacy of the letter for his conviction, why it came through UCC, and not the court to have the stamp, letter head and signature of the university if indeed he has been sentenced to three (3) months imprisonment.
He asked UCC to come out with the full ruling over his contempt of court for public clarity as he opined for all to treat the allegation of him being conviction by the court with the utmost contempt it so deserves.
