Despite a release by the Road Transport Operators on Monday, May 15, 2023, to reduce transport fares today, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, some drivers at various bus terminals have yet to effect changes.
According to them, the prices of spare parts, brake fluid, and other vehicle parts have seen no price reduction, hence their decision to also take the old fares.
The statement dated May 15, 2023, revealed that the reduction affects shared taxis, intra-city (trotro), intercity (long distance) and haulage.
“In line with the administrative arrangement on public transport fares, the road transport operators have reduced public transport fares by 10 percent to accommodate for the reduction in the price of petroleum products observed over the period”, part of the statement said.
This comes on the back of petroleum products seeing a marginal decline in the second pricing window of May 2023 as a result of the decrease in the price of crude on the international market and the relative stability of the Ghana cedi.
The statement further added that commercial transport operators have been advised to comply with the new fares and post the same at their loading terminals.
“We further request all operators, commuters and the general public to kindly cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares”, the statement concluded.
But some drivers at various bus terminals across the country are yet to affect the necessary changes.
The drivers added that traders must also reduce their prices adding that, drivers should not be the only ones to reduce their prices.
They also added that the reduction in the prices of fuel is very insignificant hence it does not warrant the reduction of transport fares.
