The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is blaming the Ministry of Health over an exorbitant clearance forms prices, which has jumped from 100 cedis to 3,000 cedis. The recruitment of nurses by high-income countries from poorer nations is “out of control”, according to the head of one of the world’s biggest nursing groups.
In 2022 more than 1,200 Ghanaian nurses joined the UK’s nursing register. This comes as the National Health Service (NHS) increasingly relies on staff from non-EU countries to fill vacancies.
But speaking to Sompa News Mr. Jones Afriyie Antoh, the Ashanti Regional Chairman Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association disclosed that there is corruption issues attached to the ongoing processes where nurses who want travel to work in the UK need to seek clearance from the Ministry of Health.
Mr. Jones Afriyie Antoh further revealed that the Ministry of Health informed them that they have stopped selling the forms not knowing they are selling it at an exorbitant prices such as 3,00 Ghana cedis.
According to him, initially the clearance form of an A4 size was sold to them at 100 cedis but due to corrupt practices they are being sold at 3,000 cedis.
He therefore appealed to the Ministry of Health to look for a lasting solution that will prevent the Nurses from travelling and stop such corrupt practices. Mr. Jones Afriyie Antoh maintained that they have presented several petitions to the Ministry of Health but nothing has been done to improve.
