The Minister of Communication and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has been called upon to brief Parliament on the just-ended SIM re-registration exercise and deactivation of unregistered SIM cards.

Presenting the business statement for the week, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed the move has become necessary due to the heightened agitation by affected subscribers.

Hundreds of mobile network subscribers who have had their SIM cards deactivated have been left stranded with some blaming it on the National Identification Authority (NIA) for not providing them with their Ghana cards on time.

This is after the National Communications Authority (NCA) disconnected some 11 million SIM cards that are yet to be registered.

With the Speaker of Parliament’s SIM card also among cards yet to be re-registered, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful will on Thursday, June 8 brief the House on the exercise and the way forward to restore affected subscribers.

Supporting the Majority leader’s request, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Sam George added, “in fact, we should have had this briefing today if possible because we are talking about over 8 million SIM cards disconnected including even the speaker of Parliament”.
