The Central Regional Forestry Division on Friday, June 9, 2023, slated for the Green Ghana Day shared close to 700,000 seedlings to be planted across the region, exceeding its estimated target to share 600,000 seedlings.
Green Ghana Day, initiated in 2020 by the Nana Addo-led government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry seizes to restore Ghana's degraded forest landscapes to equally fight against the global effect of climate change.
Seedlings dispensed in the region for planting includes: coconut, tick, ofram, mahogany, amenity trees among others.
The distinctive nationwide exercise marked this year on the theme: "Our Forests, Our Health" had an estimated target to plant at least 10 million seedlings across the country.
Bennett Ntiamoah, the Central Regional Forestry Manager described the region's Green Ghana Day to be more than successful as he pleaded on various individual and institutions who were offered seedlings to jealously care for its growth as though it is their child with frequent watering in other not to defeat the aim behind the exercise.
Minister for the Central Region, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan having planted her seedling for the year highlighted that the Green Ghana initiative has come to help, hence should be offered the needed attention it deserves as she entreated all to endeavor and plant a tree this year.
Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice Chancellor for the University of Cape Coast who joyously partook in the exercise with the Forestry Commission to plant seedlings on the school's campus remarked the need for all to be an ambassador of tree planting as he eulogized benefits human beings derive from plants.
He noted that the university back in 2021 teamed up with the Forestry Commission to plant trees on its campus each year in commemoration of the Green Ghana Day as he revealed that the school's trees planted last year have well been taken care of hence this year's addition will go a long way in beautifying the university.
