Students of the Dormaa Senior High School in the Dormaa Central municipality have won the 2023 Bono regional Renewable Energy Challenge Competition.
The challenge organized by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service in Sunyani, Thursday July 6 was under the theme: "Mechanized Small Scale Agriculture Using Renewable Energy Technologies."
The Dormaa Senior High School won with the highest points of 72.50 while Sunyani SHS, the host school of the competition had 72.25 points and St James Seminary SHS had 72.00 points.
The other participating Schools in the Bono region include Goka SHTS, Istiqaama SHS, Notre Dame Girls SHS, Sacred Heart SHS, Sumanman SHS, Nafana, Presby SHS and Nsawkaw State SHS.
The challenge ensured the participating Schools created organic fertilizer and Simple irrigation systems.
Speaking in an interview with Sompa FM in Sunyani after the challenge, Mr Julius Nkansah-Nyarko, the Senior Manager in charge of renewable energy at the Energy Commission said, the move is to engage the students to come up with innovative ways of solving challenges in the Ghanaian community in relation to farming.
He said, "This competition would assist students to come out with innovative skills, ideas and projects to transform the agriculture sector of Ghana. It would also serve as a platform to foster renewable energy focused on research and development among students.”
He explained the aim of the programme is to whip up students' interest in practical application rather than the theory being learnt over the years without practical results.
Mr Nkansah -Nyarko indicated that, the youth are full of innovations that can bring to bear on research which can be solutions to solve the renewable energy at the local level.
He indicated that, the projects presented by the students are those that are innovative ways of making farming effortless.
Some of the students of the winning school DORMASS appealed for support in order to expand their project and assist their communities to improve upon their farming practice using simple technologies.
