The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has on Saturday, July 29, 2023 honoured Ghana's Minister for Energy who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South constituency in the Ashanti region, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh with a Doctor of Educational Leadership for his stellar contribution to the country's education system.
His award also follows the instrumental role he played in securing upgrade to the university's Institute for Educational Planning and Administration to a UNESCO category two institute.
This was when UCC conferred honorary doctorate degrees to some seven (7) individuals the university regard to have had a magnanimous impact on the cultural, scientific, educational, and the social well-being of humanity and the country at large during its special congregation held.
These persons include: Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI (Paramount Chief of Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area), Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong (former CEO of GNPC, a business magnate and the immediate past Executive Chairman for Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC), Rev. Professor Herold Stewart Amonoo-Kuofi (a distinguise medical educator), Dr. Deborah Rose (an accomplished educator, researcher, a visionary and philanthropist), Dr. Yaw Adu-Agyei Gyamfi (CEO of Danpong Healthcare Group. Ltd, an experienced entrepreneur and a clinical pharmacist), and Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah.
Former recipients of the University's honorary award includes former President John Agyekum Kuffuor, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, former Vice Chancellor for the university and a former Education Minister, former President for South Africa Mvuyelwa Thabo Mbeki, late Benjamin William Mkapa, former President for Tanzania, the current President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo among others.
Having served as a former Education Minister, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempah is widely hailed for his tireless effort in the implementation of the government's free senior high school policy.
Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah, the President for Millersvilla University of Pennsylvania and the Toapentenhene of Breman Asikuma Traditional Area in the Central Region who stood on behalf of the honoraries, expressed their appreciation to UCC for the honour bestowed upon them as he promised the award won't just be a recognition of their achievements but an inspiration to do greater things.
The Energy Minister in a stint interview with Sompa News Eric Annan recounted that without character and integrity, public life is a difficult ladder to climb. Thus advised the current generation to always clinch onto honesty, good character, integrity, hard work, and the humbleness to learn as the combination of these virtues will help them facilitate a brighter future for themselves.
