The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the recent wave of attacks by armed groups in Niger, resulting in the tragic loss of several Nigerien soldiers' lives.
These acts of violence have further intensified the ongoing crisis in the country.
The turmoil escalated on July 27 when soldiers, predominantly from the presidential guard, took control of Niger's government. This led to the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and a subsequent suspension of the nation's constitution, dissolution of institutions, and closure of borders.
Despite appeals from ECOWAS for a peaceful transition of power to the constitutionally elected President, President Mohamed Bazoum has remained in the custody of the presidential guard since July 2.
ECOWAS has expressed deep concern over the mounting attacks on Nigerien soldiers by armed groups, emphasizing the urgent need for a return to constitutional order.
The regional body has called for the restoration of democratic governance as a crucial step towards addressing the escalating security challenges faced by Niger.
Meanwhile, in a bid to address the crisis, Chiefs of Defense Staff from various ECOWAS member countries are scheduled to convene in Accra today, Thursday, August 17, 2023. The summit aims to formulate a comprehensive strategy for potential military intervention in Niger.
