Drivers and residents of Ataabadze, Essaman, Pershie, and Bantuma which are suburbs of Elmina in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region have on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 embarked on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure to the area's Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) over the poor state of the Ataabadze-Bantuma road.
Construction of the road which has over four years now been awarded to Legna Constructions Limited, have saw the contractor abandon site over a year now due to lack of fund.
The damnable road network which comes with vast economic benefits to residents of Elmina, connects the Takoradi-Accra highway to the Central Region's top hospitality enclave and to the Elmina Castle.
The route appears the only access road to hotels like the Coconut Grove Beach Resort, Golden Hill Parker Hotel, Lemon Beach Resort, and the Elmina Bay Resort.
Not only are residents inconvenienced by this poor road network, but visitors who grows the desire to visit these wonderful resorts.
Demonstrators in an interview with the media, issued a firm warning to the government never to try in bringing ballot boxes to the area in the 2024 general election if their estimated 4km road stretch which has turned in aborting innocent babies, injured many through avoidable accidents and rendered many taxi drivers jobless over car breakdown isn't fixed.
MCE for KEEA, Hon. Solomon Ebo Appiah upon been served a petition from these demonstrators to have their road attended to within the next two weeks, assured them of a positive response from his quarters but urged them to as well petition the municipality's Member of Parliament Hon. Samuel Atta-Mills, as he's the one in Accra with the Roads Minister.
The MP having heard of such utterance come from his MCE, quizzed to find out who represents the President in the constituency and what exactly the Assembly uses its generated funds from levy collection and towing of cars for.
Hon. Samuel Atta-Mills further highlighted, he's in parliament specifically for the enactment of law, budget allocations, and for the formation of oversight on the Executive. Hence isn't his work as the MP to construct roads, as impelled the Assembly to rather have contractor for the road paid of his arrears to resume back to work.
