The Concern Farmers Association in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo region has called on civil actors and human rights activists to intervene and stem what they described as the rising human rights violations and abuses in the area.
According to the association, a group of farmers whose farms and properties had been directly or indirectly affected by the operation of the Newmont Ahafo North project "have been characterized by human rights violations and abuses."
The group has about 84 members spread across the five mining communities including; Terchire, Afrisipakrom, Susuanso, Yamfo and Adrobaa.
Addressing a news conference at Afrisipakrom, the group "expressed worry Newmont has failed to conduct land assessment and survey of our members and has entered their lands destroying their farms and properties."
"The company has unlawfully entered the farms and destroy the properties of about eight of our members without their consent. Some of the properties include teak plantation, cocoa farms, palm trees and food crops.
Mr John Mensah, leaders of the association said, "Newmont has admitted to the destruction of the uncompensated lands and properties", but had failed to compensate the affected farmers and land owners.
