Buyers and consumers of bottled and canned food have been urged to check the expiry dates to avoid buying and consuming unwholesome products, as the Christmas festivities approach.
According to Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister many bottled and canned products were set to expire, as the year ends, and called on everybody to help the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) to rid the market of expired and unwholesome food items, drugs and cosmetics.
Speaking in an interview with Sompa FM in Sunyani on food safety, the Regional Minister said expired and unwholesome food items had serious health risks on the populace.
She, therefore, commended the FDA for its post-market surveillance exercises, and called on the Authority to intensify the exercise in shops and market places, and further urged consumers to promptly report expired products to the Authority.
Mad Owusu-Banahene said due to the region’s proximity to Ivory Coast, the probability of some traders bringing unregistered, fake and unwholesome products to the region remained high.
“We must all be on the watch and check infiltration of contaminated, unregistered and fake products and cosmetics which are dangerous to our health and general wellbeing”, she stated.
