New Abirem, a community in the Birim North District of the Eastern region, is reeling from a shocking incident that took place on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
The lifeless body of Malik Abacha, a man believed to be in his late 30s, faced brutal treatment at the hands of enraged youth.
The distressing incident occured following a reported misunderstanding between the youth and the deceased's family.
Allegations of Malik's involvement in money rituals (Sakawa) and other crimes in the area fueled the anger of the youth, prompting them to take matters into their own hands before allowing the deceased to be buried.
Despite the family's awareness of the youth's intentions, attempts were made to proceed with Malik's burial by hiring bouncers and police.
Tensions, however, escalated, leading to a confrontation with the angry youth who obstructed the burial by setting up roadblocks.
The intervention of the Abirem District Police commander was necessary to restore order.
Unfortunately, despite efforts to maintain peace, the situation took a dark turn during the burial proceedings at the cemetery.
In a disturbing act captured on video, the coffin bearing the inscription "Holy Bible" was forcefully knocked to the ground, and the lifeless body of Malik was mercilessly lashed by the angry mob.
The coffin lay destroyed as the deceased was subjected to a shocking assault .
A member of the bereaved family vehemently condemned the act, expressing strong disapproval of the violent demonstration by the youth.
The family member emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and called for a thorough investigation leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
The community now grapples with the aftermath of this deeply troubling incident.
