The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims as earmarked on the third Sunday of every November in a calendar, has witnessed the Central Region celebrate this year's version in a grand style, spearheaded by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
The NRSA had this year's Day of Remembrance held at Winneba in the Effutu Municipality following the high rate of accident cases recorded on the Winneba–Kasoa N1 Highway.
Present at the event were representatives from the Winneba Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Ambulance Service–Winneba, Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Religious leaders, the National Insurance Commission (NIC), the National Road Safety Authority, Effutu Municipal Assembly among others.
The Central Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority, Ms. Linda Afotey-Annang at the event revealed the region to have recorded a total of 787 accident cases, leading to 135 deaths and 1,372 injuries as at the end of September, 2023.
She, therefore, appealed to drivers, passengers and pedestrians to take extra caution when using the road.
As part of the remembrance observation, NRSA presented some medical consumables, bandages, body bags, toiletries, bottled water among other items to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, since the hospital is known to be the medical facility which receives majority of the area's accident victims.
The Central Regional Manager of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Madam Nicholina Naa Yeye Adumuah also advised drivers to adhere to all road regulations and should have a sense of love for each other while using the road.
She said that most of the cases often reported at her office, normally has to do with drivers who do not qualify to drive a particular vehicle or do not have the requisite license to drive.
Additionally, she said that a number of vehicles do not have insurance while other vehicles are operating with expired insurance which poses danger to road users.
Michael Peprah, the Assistant Health Service Administrator who on behalf of the hospital received the donated items, thanked the National Road Safety Authority for its benevolent gesture towards the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, as he ascertained that the items donated will immensely enhance the hospital's treatment to accident victims.
