Leadership of the Ghana Union Traders' Association (GUTA) in the Central Region has vehemently warned the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to have all its officers removed from their shops following the GRA's Tax Invoice Invigilation Exercise.
According to leadership of the traders union, the exercise undertaken by GRA is been experienced at only a few selected shops which deems it inappropriate, untimely, unacceptable and an infringement on the right of owners of these shops.
The union recounted to have written to both the southern and northern sector offices of the GRA in the region on December 4, 2023 following the worrying situation confronting its members, but had managers of these offices point it out to the union that the agitated exercise is suctioned by the GRA head office and that there is nothing they can do about the issue.
Addressing the media after a press conference held at the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast, Paul Kofi McCarthy, the Central Regional GUTA Chairman described GRA to be lazy following its undertaken approach in collecting revenue from law abiding citizens like themselves, leaving foreigners to swerve taxes through dubious means.
Kenneth Anyane Buadu, the Central Regional Vice Chairman for GUTA noted that the presence of these GRA officers poses threat to both their shop attendants and customers, as these officers often comes to their shops armed with guns.
Treasurer for GUTA in the Central Region who doubles as Queen Mother for the Abura Market in Cape Coast, Aunty Sisi equally impelled government to standardize its VAT imposed on goods for traders to have a fair and transparent market.
To this end, the union is calling on GRA to withdraw all its officers from their shops, else will have them call for a massive demonstration against the outfit with a subsequent closure of all their shops in the region, as the union finds the presence of GRA officials in their shops more policing and imposing and thus threatening the progress of their work.
