The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced the commencement of the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) from Thursday, February 1, 2024.
According to them, the Act will impose a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on internal combustion engine vehicles.
The GRA emphasised that the move aligns with the government's commitment to addressing greenhouse gas emissions.
The implementation of the emissions levies aims to promote the adoption of eco-friendly technology and green energy, contributing to improved environmental management and the control of air and water pollution.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) are preparing to institute a 20% increase in lorry fares across the country.
A deputy Public relations Officer of the GPRTU Mr. Samuel Amoah speaking to Sompa News in an interview said, the government failed to respond to their calls for abolition of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) and factors affecting their operations.
Due to that the Union would implement the 20% increment in the coming days.
The President of the Okada Riders Association of Ghana Michael Kofi Owusu on his part says they would be compelled to increase the fares of their operations since the government has failed to listen to their calls to abolish the Emissions Levy Act.
