Despite the role of the Ghana Police Service in ensuring law and order is maintained in the country, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has bemoaned their failure in winning the fight against attacks on Journalists.
Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the association indicated that nine (9) attacks on Journalists in the country from March to October were recorded in 2023 alone, a situation he described as worrying.
Mr Dwumfour stressed the Police has however, failed in bringing into book the perpetrators of assault on Journalists despite the association's continuos pursue of the matter.
David Kobina, a journalist with Cape FM was attacked on January 4, following a vetting process for parliamentary aspirants at the Central Regional Coordinating Council in Cape Coast.
Citi News’ Northern Regional Reporter, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira was attacked by Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Mahama and his team while he was reporting on the disruption of the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency on January 27, 2024.
But Mr Dwumfour, addressing Journalists during a training workshop organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in partnership with the US Embassy Ghana on Friday February 9 at Kumasi said, "I called on the Police to as a matter urgency arrest any MP, Minister or any individual who attack a Journalist."
He said the GJA trust the professional competencies of the Police and expect them to act swiftly on all the reported attacks on Journalists.
The media practitioners drawn from the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions which forms the zone three (3) of the nationwide training gathered at the Camp Martin Hotel in Fumesua-Kumasi to undergo the training.
Dignitaries in attendance were the representatives from the US Embassy Ghana, the National and some regional executives of the GJA, the National Media Commission, the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, a communication lecturer with the KNUST, representatives of both New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress.
