Mr. Bernard Oduro Takyi, a certified chartered economist and member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has attributed his recent remand into Police custody of being politically motivated.
An Accra Circuit Court remanded into Police custody the businessman accused of defrauding two persons of $27,000 under the pretext of securing them USA visas.
Bernard Oduro Takyi was accused of forging the embarkation and disembarkation stamps of Singapore, South Africa, Mauritius and Turkey in the various passports of the two complainants.
In an interview with Akua Nyarko Abronoma, host of Sompa 98.9FM’s Me Man Nti political show on Saturday February 17 Mr Oduro Takyi explained that, “In May last year, I secured visas for two pro NPP members who were scheduled to travel to the USA in June. These are people I know. They got the visa in May and the timeline for the travel was in June but as at the end of October they had not travelled so the embassy cancelled their visas.”
“We had an agreement and the agreement was that anytime I secure a visa for you and there’s a problem, I will payback 20% of the money the client paid to my company. But in the case of these two individuals I offered to pay 50% but they rejected it.”
“So along the line, I travelled to Guinea and upon my return I received an invite to the Cantonment Police Station. The day I was invited to Cantonment Police station, I got there and I was told they have arraigned me to be taken to court. I was not even given the chance to get a lawyer. Lawyer Alfred Tuah Yeboah is aware of what I’m telling you. When he got to know of it, I had already spent four days in the Police custody. It was politically motivated.”
The outspoken member of the NDC indicated that, the decision to take him to court and remand him alone is not an offence, saying, “I have clear conscience so there’s nothing to fear. I spent one week in police custody and was granted bail on 12th February.”
