The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) is yet to elect a Presiding Member (PM) for the Assembly after non of the two contestants presented to vie for the position failed on two successive occasions to secure two thirds of the total votes of the Assembly.
This according to the Assembly's standing orders, leave the two contestants, Hon. Abdul Malik Adjei and Hon. Nana Kweku Awuku, the incumbent PM with no chance but be made to step aside until two years time for a new set of interested contestants present themselves for a date to be fix for their election to elect a Presiding Member from them.
The keenly contested CCMA Presiding Member election which saw all 67 Assembly Members exercise their franchise, comprised of 45 elected Assembly Members, 21 government appointees plus the Municipal Chief Executive.
Hon. Nana Kweku Awuku, the yet to replaced CCMA Presiding Member addressing the media after his unsuccessful attempts to retain his position, recounted never to be disappointed by the outcome of the election, having enjoyed the position on three consecutive times.
He, however, relayed to fell sorry for his contender who is yet to taste the position for the first time after his third successive attempts, since the two will be made to step aside until two years before any of them can rise to contest again for the position according to law governing Assembly elections in the country.
Hon. Abdul Malik Adjei, the Assemblyman for Abura Etsifi/Ayifua Electoral Area after his disappointing Presiding Member election outcome, blamed partisan politics to be interfering and affecting dealings of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly.
Meanwhile, some Assembly Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), called for the Presiding Membership role to be given to an NDC member to enable the Assembly have a politically balanced house.
Hon. Kate Swanzy, Assembly Woman for Amanful East Electoral Area argued that an NDC member from the house, be made to assume the Presiding Member position, since the position has for a long while be enjoyed by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
