The Energy Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has directed the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to immediately start the operation of the AMERI plant from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to stabilize electricity supply in the middle part of the country.
Mr Kwadwo Poku, an Energy Expert and a member of the manifesto committee of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in an interview on Sompa FM's Ghana Fapim show said the directive will go a long way to address the unstable energy situation in the Ashanti Region.
He said its the strategic plan of the government to relocate it to Kumasi to improve the reliability of power supply in the middle and the northern sections of the power grid.
Mr Kojo Poku added that it is a game changer that will reduce the technical losses significantly.
"I know the gas pipeline that’s being constructed ultimately can do about 600 plus megawatts in Ashanti Region. We really want to see generators go. Normally, it’s preferred that the generator is close to the load."
Residents of Kumasi in recent times have demanded for a time table to enable them plan ahead if times.
Some of the populace in the Ashanti Region who have complained of the menace of the Dumsor or power outages said they have had their appliances destroyed as well as their goods stored in refrigerators.
Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei Mensah has equally threatened to embark on a demonstration if GRIDCO and the Electricity Company of Ghana do not explain to him recent power outages happening in the region.
