Over sixteen shops were burnt into ashes this morning when fire gutted Obuasi Central Market at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to SOMPA NEWS, DO lll Rita Agboli, the Obuasi Municipal Fire Commander said the service received a distressed call from a woman from the community and they were forced to run over to the scene only to see the shops in wild flames of fire.
She indicated that the fire could have been brought down under control but the disorganized nature of the structures made it difficult for the rescue team to bring the situation under as early as expected.
DO lll Rita Agboli further appealed to the developers to use concrete materials in construction since most of the shops could have been saved if they were not wooden structures.
According to her, investigations have been opened into the disaster to find the root cause of the outbreak.
