Pits to a deserted galamsey concession at Dunkwa-Abesewa in the Upper Denkyira East Constituency in the Central Region have got residents worried over repeated death incidents recorded at the area.
The abandoned galamsey concession which have been left unreclaimed in the past four years now with pits scattered all over, have got residents talking after recently claiming the lives of two final year Junior High School students at the community.
Dominic Abu, 15, and Enoch Ogo, 16, who recently fell prey to the abandoned pit are both final year pupils of the Abisco M/A Basic School at Abesewa.
The incident which occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, around 4:30pm has pulled wide discussion among residents of the area who appears perturbed over the issue.
A final year student of the St. Andrews Senior School is said to have equally suffered similar fate about two-year ago, upon his attempt to use the shortcut route from Abesewa to Barrier which was then flooded on his way home from school, but unfortunately got slipped into one of the pits to the forsaken galamsey site and died.
Abena Owusuwaa, Mother to deceased Enoch Ogo in an interview with Sompa News Eric Annan, recounted that the galamsey site following its death records has instill fear in parents at Abesewa, as she revealed three persons including her son to have died prematurely to the pits.
Father to late Dominic Abu, Isaac Jenny, disclosed that deceased's biological father was buried just a month ago, only for the boy to follow suit by drowning which has left the family in a state of dilemma.
He appealed on leadership of the constituency to act swiftly by reclaiming the abandoned galamsey land in other not to have another family experience the grieve that they the family of Dominic Abu and Enoch Ogo have suffered.
Assemblyman for Compound Electoral Area, Hon. Ernest Arkon having bemoaned the series of death recorded at the galamsey site, noted to have given the Municipal Chief Executive and Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East, a maximum of 4 months to see to the reclamation of the land, else will have residents of the area stage a massive demonstration against them.
Okofrobour Obeng Nuakoh lll, chief of Dunkwa in an interview, identified one Mr. Oppong who is said to have relocated to Accra to be one of the miners whose mining activity at area have degraded the land as such.
The Dunkwa chief again refuted to claims of him being behind galamsey activities within Dunkwa and its environs to establish that his reign as chief encompasses only within Dunkwa and nowhere else. Hence, appealed on citizenry of the country to get their facts right as he is innocent of all such rumours.
The duo following their unfortunately death, were laid to rest a few days back.
