The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has charged Ghanaian citizenry and political parties in the country to guard against factors capable to disrupt the peace Ghana shares ahead of the country's general election slated for December 7, 2024.
According to the union, the peace presently enjoyed by Ghana is priceless, as no amount of money can be made to purchase it.
Therefore, the need for all to make conscious effort not to allow party politics destroy the peace the country has enjoyed over the years.
TUC made this statement at this year's regional May Day celebration held in Kasoa in the Central Region on the theme, "Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Election for National Development."
Cynthia Aba Sam Ananoo, the Central Regional TUC Secretary addressing labour unions gathered for the 2024 May Day celebration in the Central Region, expressed dismay at the porous economic management Ghana has in recent times suffered, but encouraged all well meaning citizens of the country to do all it takes to uphold the small peace the nation prides itself with.
"Ghana as we all know, has not done too well in economic management, but at least we are enjoying relative peace compared to other countries in the African sub-region."
"The peace we are enjoying is priceless, so we should never allow partisan politics to destroy it. Peace is the only thing left for us, so we should do everything we can to keep it" Cynthia Ananoo noted.
She again stressed on the need for security agencies and the Electoral Commission to be adequately resource to conduct a free and fair election, as she urged churches and mosques in the country not to only pray for peace but should also preach about peace.
The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan at the event recounted May Day to be an important occasion for working people to raise their collective voice with respect to their demands and challenges facing them and their trade unions.
She noted with admiration, the theme chosen by TUC to earmark this year's May Day celebration which she highlighted to run directly in consonance with the effort of government and all well meaning Ghanaians in the nation's collective responsibility to ensure peaceful general election in 2024 towards the forward match of Ghana to become a prosperous country.
Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, conscientized workers to have a strong part to play in ensuring Ghana secure an election devoid of conflict, as this year's general election emerge a crucial one.
