The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has sounded a clarion call to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to do all it can to revive the country's defunct Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) games.
Officers of the GNFS in the Central and Western Regional Fire Commands, following their jointly held annual International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) games, have hinted on the Sports Ministry to use its games as basis to reinstate the SESSA games.
Defunct SESSA games, once assisted to unearth sufficient sporting talents in the country through the inter-services competition which enabled excellent performances in Ghana's respective national teams at the national and international levels.
The service made the appeal last Friday when it held the second edition of its IFFD games which witnessed the Central Regional Fire Command, Fire Service Department of the Takoradi Ports and Harbour, and the Western Regional Fire Command battle it out at the Adisadel College Park in Cape Coast in various sporting activities.
Western Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFOl Frederick Ohemeng in an engagement with the media, pleaded on the need for the Sports Ministry to assist in the revival of the SESSA games through the Central and Western Regional Fire Command's organized IFFD games, to enable the security services recruit more sporting talents.
He again called upon well-meaning organizations to support the Fire Commands in its organization and determination to expand the IFFD games across the country.
ADOl Mahama Zangina, Head Coach of the Central Regional GNFS volleyball team, additionally made a humble appeal to the Minister of Sports to assist leadership of the country's security services to resurrect the SESSA games to aid budding sporting talents in the country.
ACFOl John Amarlai Amartey, the Central Regional Commander for the GNFS in his welcome address, indicated this year's edition of the IFFD games to have seen improvement with the introduction of other sporting games like sack race, spoon and lime, tag of peace, and penalty shootouts by various commanders, apart from the volleyball and football games competed in last year.
The games this year also witnessed additional awards to that of last year, like the best player for football, volleyball (men and women), as well as the most discipline team, who were all awarded with certificates.
The IFFD games with its foredeals, sort to bring personnel within the various Fire Commands together to engender unity, help and collaborate with each other anywhere they find themselves, and to also bring out the best sports talents for the benefit of Ghana.
