The Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly Hon. Elijah Adansi-Bonah has revealed that averagely 98% of students who sit for Basic Education Certificate Examination in the Municipality get placed in Senior High Schools.
Obuasi has been credited with churning out excellent BECE results over the years. Some Junior High School graduates from the Municipality have also gone ahead to win presidential awards.
Honorable Adansi-Bonah attributed the enviable academic records of the Municipality to collaborative efforts of the Municipal Assembly, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine and the Education Directorate in preparing the candidates adequately for the Examination.
Speaking to the media after visiting the designated examination centers to motivate the candidates ahead of the 2024 BECE, he stated that since he became the MCE in 2017, he has put in place measures to improve education in the Municipality. These he said include, the provision of infrastructure, sponsoring mock examination and sponsoring orientation for teachers and BECE candidates.
" These deliberate measures put in place by the Assembly since I became the MCE have contributed to the remarkable performances we have been producing over the years", the Obuasi MCE asserted.
Hon. Adansi-Bonah also commended AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for their contributions towards improving the quality of education in the Municipality emphasizing that their interventions in education including the yet to be commissioned Exams printing center in the Municipality lends credence to their commitment towards developing the human resource capital in the Municipality.
He said the Assembly played a major role in the construction of the Exams printing center by making land available for the facility. He was optimistic that the center will relieve parents of some financial burdens of providing funds for the printing of examination papers for their wards.
Meanwhile a total of 2533 candidates made up of 1217 boys and 1316 girls will write the 2024 BECE in the Obuasi Municipality at 8 different centres.
According to the Municipal Director of Education George Alfred Koomson, the candidates are from 27 public schools and 33 pubic schools. 1851 of the total number of candidates are from public schools while 682 are from private schools.
He said the students have had adequate preparations ahead of the examination. He confirmed that the Directorate in collaboration with the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Parents Associations and AngloGold Ashanti have organized mock Exams and orientation for both teachers and students.
" This year's BECE is quite unique because of the introduction of career technology and creative arts as part of the new curriculum, so, there was the need for orientation on these areas. This is when AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine came in to support ", Mr. Koomson added.
He cautioned students to guard against confrontations and attacks after the exams stating that the security services were on hand to deal with recalcitrant students who break the law.
