President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) Mr. Prince Obeng Himmah has disclosed that the Association has called off the over two months old strike due to the massive interventions from the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s office. Speaking to SOMPA NEWS after the members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) calling off the strike, Mr. Prince Obeng Himmah said they have remained home for the past sixty days adding the actions and inactions of the Ministry of Education, Fair wages and Salary Commission and National Labour Commission further exacerbated the road map.
In the statement, CETAG revealed that during an emergency virtual National Council meeting held on August 20, 2024, members unanimously agreed to call off the strike with immediate effect. “The decision to call off the strike, according to the statement follows CETAG’s meeting with the Office of the Vice President on August 15, 2024, at the Jubilee House and the assurance given to stand surety for resolution of the impasse,” the statement read. The association further outlined the road map the government must meet to prevent another strike.
Mr. Prince Obeng Himmah further explained that their decision to call off the strike was also due to the fact that, they have been promised that: “the frozen July 2024 and August 2024 salaries shall be paid together at the end of August 2024. That, the offline migration of the staff shall be completed at the end of August 2024. The offline migration data shall be sent to all 46 colleges of education for verification by individual staff before processing by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) in September 2024. That, all holders of researched Master’s degrees shall be migrated as Assistant Lecturers”.
Mr. Prince Obeng Himmah, however entreated the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to honour his promise as enshrined in the MOU adding that they would be compelled to resume the strike if the promises are relegated to the background at the end of October, this year.
