The chief of Ekon, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region, Nana Kwame Edu Ababio has again called on the government over his community's dying need of sea defence and breakwater.
Ekon which is well known to be a fishing community, has over the years been in the news following the community's battling tidal wave challenge which has seen to the destruction of many unquantifiable properties and lives.
According to the chief, there is nothing anyone will do to excite the community and its residents than to construct for them a sea defence and breakwater.
He made this passionate plea on Saturday at this year's Ekon Apayem Festival dubbed, "Development Of Ekon: The Time Is Now."
Nana Kwame Edu Ababio observed that the absence of breakwater and sea defence in his community has over the years made life unbearable for residents therein, having had over 150 structures rinsed by tidal wave, leading to lost of several lives with many turned physically incapacitated.
The chief bemoaned that the area's lack of breakwater, has led to many husbands abandoning their homes in search for greener pastures. Leaving their families behind to have the education of their children drawn backwards.
He uncovered that many marriages have been destroyed over the fact that Ekon is still yet to have a sea defence to check the community's disturbing sea wave which has rendered many husbands jobless since their livelihood of fishing has been bolted away by the area's tidal wave challenge.
Nana Edu Ababio bewailed that this challenge has significantly contributed to the dwindling of businesses at the area, since many residents have been forced to migrate from the community to have Ekon become a ghost camp on normal days and has equally stagnate development of the community.
He called on the Minster for Works and Housing, Hon. Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah to as a sense of urgency come to the aid of Ekon with a sea defence and breakwater since letters issued to the Mayor of Cape Coast Metropolis, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, and the Central Regional Minister all proved futile.
