The World Bank's regional vice president for Western and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, recently visited His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to discuss the feasibility of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System, a key component of the Kumasi Urban Mobility Accessibility Project (KUMAP). The project is aimed at addressing Kumasi's growing transportation challenges and enhancing mobility within the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.
KUMAP will initially target several metropolitan and municipal Assemblies, including Kumasi, Ejisu, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, and Atwima Kwabiagya South. During the meeting, Mr. Diagana assured Otumfuo Osei Tutu II that the World Bank, after receiving a proposal from the Government of Ghana, is committed to supporting the project, which will focus on improving mobility and ensuring transportation safety in the region.
“We are fully committed to working with the Government of Ghana to enhance transport systems in Kumasi, and we are excited to support this important project,” Mr. Diagana stated.
On her part, Madam Beatrice Kwarteng Osei Asare, Ashanti Regional Development and Planning Officer, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of the BRT system in facilitating better urban growth management and regional development. She stressed the need for public support and active engagement from the local assemblies to ensure the successful execution of the initiative.
Finally, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his deep appreciation for the World Bank’s ongoing support to Ghana’s development, particularly in improving the country’s transportation infrastructure. The Asantehene highlighted the significance of the project in transforming Kumasi’s transport system, making it safer and more efficient for its expanding population.
“We are grateful to the World Bank for their continued support to Ghana. I am confident that this project will not only improve transportation in Kumasi but will also contribute to the development of the entire Ashanti Region,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II remarked.
The KUMAP initiative marks a significant milestone in addressing Kumasi's urban mobility needs, enhancing transport efficiency, and contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
