The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisation (GFD) has called on the government to actively involve recognised disability organisations and associations in the implementation of policies and programmes.
Mr John Gyamfi Yeboah Asuamah, the Dormaa Central Municipal Branch Secretary of the GFD who made the call said "the process of implementation of programmes and policies, and Election 2024 political party manifesto of President John Dramani Mahama's government must be inclusive for the PwDs, the vulnerable and the minority groups".
"The campaign promise of President Mahama and the NDC manifesto appeared to have no clear road map for the implementation of policies and programmes in favour of the PwDs", he stated.
In an interview with the media Dormaa-Ahenkro on the expectations of the Association from the government, Mr Asuamah said "we know best what we like", worrying that "there's a big challenge and disconnect about the extent to which PwDs inputs and ideas are solicited and implemented".
He cautioned the government against "making decisions without widely and broadly including the inputs of the PwDs", and lauded the contributions of successive governments for the implementation of the Disability Act, 2006, as well as guidelines for the disbursement of Disability fund of the District Assemblies.
"But the government has more to do to better the lives of the PwDs", he stated and mentioned inadequate resources for the National Council for Disability, and lack of Regional Offices for the council.
"There are still challenges for the PwDs accessing public institutions because of their unfriendly nature of the buildings", Mr Asuamah stated, and further appealed to the government to facilitate the prompt release and disbursement of the Disability fund to the PwDs.
