The District Director of Education for Obuasi East Mr. Kwabena Owusu Nketia has entreated parents within the district to endeavor to bring their wards to school wthout exercising any fears since the re-opening was as a result of an advice from the security officers with the area.
Speaking to SOMPA NEWS following the re-opening today, Mr. Kwabena Owusu Nketia, said the education directorate could not from their own volition re-open the school if they were not briefed and assured of the safety of the school children, teachers and propertiy belonging to the state.
He said there was a relatively peaceful atmosphere at the moment compared to last Monday adding that parents must trust the security over the assurance given over the safety of their children.
Scores of miners were reported dead, with others injured, following a violent confrontation between small scale miners and military personnel assigned to provide security for AngloGold Obuasi Gold Mine during last weekend. The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, but preliminary reports suggest the miners had invaded one of the company’s mine shafts, demanding access to a concession for their operations. During the confrontation, gunshots were reportedly fired, leading to fatalities and injuries.
It would be recalled that schools within the Obuasi East municipality from the Primary to the Senior High School levels were told to remain home due to the tension. Those attending the AngloGold Ashanti schools would rather report to the schools from Monday, 27th January, 2025, a statement signed by Mr. Simon Peter K. Attah-Cato, the Executive Director of AngloGold Ashanti schools urged.
Mr. Kwabena Owusu Nketia, further assured that plans were underway to ensure students recover the lost periods during the last three days but expressed worry over low attendance on the part of the students on the first day of the re-opening.
