Police officer, Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, has tragically lost his life after drowning in River Offin at Assin Asaman in the Central Region while participating in a high-stakes operation against illegal mining (galamsey) on Wednesday morning.
The officer’s body was recovered following a meticulous four-hour search by local police and rescue teams.
After being retrieved from the river, Officer Dogbe’s body was transported to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where medical professionals on duty confirmed his death after conducting an examination.
The news of the officer's untimely passing has shaken the local police force and the community.
The fatal incident took place during a swoop operation organized by the Central North Regional Police Command as part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, which has been devastating the environment in the Central Region.
According to reports, upon seeing the police approaching, suspected illegal miners fled in various directions, with some of them attempting to escape by crossing River Offin.
In the process of trying to seize and destroy mining equipment, Officer Dogbe tragically lost his footing while navigating the treacherous terrain along the riverbank, slipped into the water, and was unable to recover.
The body has since been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital for preservation purposes.
