Traders at the Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast have praised the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Command in the Central Region for its stellar efforts in creating fire safety awareness.
The recognition coincides with this year's International Firefighters Day celebration, which honors the bravery and dedication of firefighters worldwide.
By educating traders and residents about fire risks and prevention strategies, the GNFS helps to reduce the likelihood of fires and ensures a safer environment for everyone.
The Central Regional GNFS Command marking this year's International Firefighters Day through enhanced public sensitization on Friday, accompanied by the Ghana Ambulance Service in Cape Coast, staged an accident on the Nkanfoa Station-Kotokuraba road stretch to demonstrate to pedestrians how the Service strives in attending to such incidents.
The Service afterwards, proceeded to the Kotokuraba market where they staged a fire outbreak to illustrate to traders how congested the market's access routes are and how tiring it will be for the GNFS should any unseen fire breaks out in the market.
The undertaken demonstrations were to create public awareness and also showcase the dangers Fire personnel faces in line of duty for the citizenry to appreciate their efforts, particularly in combating fires rather than abuse and chastise them as often witnessed.
Some traders of the Kotokuraba market following the awareness created by the Region's Fire Command, commended their effort which to them goes a long way to protect their hard earned capital, but appealed on the GNFS to periodically come up with such educative sensitization.
They additionally cautioned fellow traders to desist the act of cooking at the market to prevent impending fire guts.
However, the GNFS Central Region Commander, ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah appealed on the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to see to the evacuation of persons trading on the market's access roads in other to defeat any future occurrences in combating fire incidents at the market center.
She further pleaded for sponsorships to propel the Fire Service carryout more of such public sensitization on fire safety in the Region.
