The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has issued a stern warning to the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, over alleged plans to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo if they return to power.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Ahiagbah described the alleged intentions of the NDC as purely political, not legal. According to him, the idea of removing the Chief Justice has nothing to do with the law but is a calculated political strategy to gain full control over the country's democratic institutions.
“What is happening is not about law. If you listen to the lawyers, they will make it sound legal, but it’s purely political,” he said. “Politics comes first in the presidency, how power is shared and who controls what. The law only shapes how that is done.”
He alleged that the NDC’s ultimate goal is to replace the current Chief Justice and subsequently the Electoral Commission Chairperson, so that a future Mahama presidency can have full control over the judiciary and electoral processes.
“If they succeed, Mahama will appoint his own Chief Justice and EC boss, and they will do his bidding,” Ahiagbah claimed. “We in the NPP will not sit down for that to happen. If they dare, we will make this country ungovernable for them.”
He concluded by saying Mahama's silence on the matter is a confirmation of his intentions, and the NPP will resist any such moves with all the force necessary.
