The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah has voiced frustration over the recent attacks on personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and its trucks.
According to him, this act of abuse on firefighters is disturbing and unacceptable so far operations of the GNFS is concern.
Mr. Bless Darkey, the Regional Coordinating Director made this assertion on behalf of the Central Regional Minister at a ceremony to climax this year's International Firefighters Day celebration held at the Regional GNFS headquarters in Cape Coast on Monday dubbed: "Appreciating Our Heroes: Say No To Firefighter Assault and Fire Truck Vandalism."
Speaking at the ceremony, he admonished that the sacrifices of firefighters shouldn't be taken for granted, as they are not merely emergency responders but community heroes.
According to him, the courage of the GNFS do not only deserve medals but also the mutual respect of the citizenry and consistent support.
"It is therefore disturbing that in recent times we have witnessed act of violence against fire personnel and vandalism of fire tenders. Such behavior is unacceptable," he lamented.
Adding that operational delays or equipment challenges should not or never be an excuse for aggression against those working under the most difficult and dangerous circumstances. Instead, let Ghanaians channel their frustrations into productive advocacy for better resourcing and logistical support for GNFS.
ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah, the Regional GNFS Commander, advocated the need for outmost respect for firefighters who risk their lives daily to save mankind and the environment.
She emphasized that assault on firefighters and damage to fire trucks endanger lives, since every delay caused by violence can lead to lost of lives and properties of others.
Mr. George Tecku, Regional Deputy Commissioner of Immigration in admonishing his sincere solidarity to the GNFS, charged personnel of the Service never to be discourage with their immeasurable effort of selflessness which has is well appreciated by most Ghanaians, but a few section who seems ignorant of the immense challenges posed on them.
