Former Ghana’s ambassador to India, His Excellency Sam Pee Yaley has called for a debate on the ex-gratia as being resurrected by the former president, Mr John Dramani Mahama, that he would tackle the issue once he comes back in future as the president of the republic.
Commenting on the issue, the former ambassador in the elsewhere John Mahama led administration in an exclusive interview with Omanhene Yaw Adu Boakye on Sompa Tv morning show on Tuesday August 30, 2022 said, the current system is having a serious drain on the economy since the state has to provide monies for the beneficiaries every four years.
It is perceived that Parliamentarian get thank you (Ex-Gratia) from the Ghanaian tax payers every four years regardless of whether they are re-elected or not. A member who served for 20 years get five times ex-gratia.
Record shows that the longest serving Member of Parliament during the fourth republic served for 28 years which translates to seven times ex-gratia.
This has been a subject of discussion in the public space, it is believed that ex-gratia is not only paid to parliamentarians and politicians alone but extends to some selected public servants.
Sam Pee Yaley who served as the deputy chief executive officer of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority and also served as the Authority’s Acting Chief Executive Officer till 2014 before he handed over to Laud Senanu, and was also appointed the ambassador to India believes the timing is right and perfectly agrees with the former president.
