The NDC's National Professional Forum's Women Commissioner, Madam Sophia Otabil has sounded a clarion call to Ghanaian female Members of Parliament (MP) to take it upon themselves taxes imposed on sanitary pads are scrapped.
She said women are at the receiving end of the country's present economical difficulties regarding mandatory monthly upkeep hence the need for female parliamentarians' help in pushing on the floor of parliament for the total abolishment of taxes placed on sanitary pads.
She said this at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital where the organization donated baby items to the medical facility's Maternity Ward to be given to needy maternity patients coming for delivery.
The donation was part of activities to mark the organization's 5th Anniversary slated on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
The Items donated include diapers, gallons of Dettol, baby wipes, toilet rolls, baby socks, and sanitary pads, which cost GH¢12,000 according to Madam Sophia.
Madam Sophia addressing the media after the donation said, what propelled the organization to donate such items, was several challenges confronting the hospital which include its periodic treatment of deprived maternity patients who come for free delivery.
She told Sompa TV/FM Eric Annan that the scrapping of the pad taxes will lessen the burden on women.
Mr. Charles Ebow Baako, administrator in charge of Maternal Health Service, on behalf of the medical center took the items, thanked the organization, and said the donated items will go a long way in aiding the hospital's service delivery, especially to its economically challenged maternity patients.
Madam Evelyn Mensah, on behalf of the nursing mothers, thanked the organization for its extended kindness to them, as she wished the NDC success in its 2024 general elections for continuous support.
