President Nana Akufo-Addo has dragged former president, John Dramani Mahama over his initial comment passed on the newly commissioned Elmina Fishing Harbour to be a scam.
He recalled the former president was emphatic on his words in tagging the project to be a "sakawa" fishing harbour only four months to its sod cutting.
Nana Addo made this statement in his address at the commissioning of the expanded Elmina Fishing Harbour on Friday May 26, 2023.
The president remarked that John Dramani Mahama back in December last year outlined that the expansion of the fishing harbour will never materialized which has turned to be otherwise.
He added that the commissioning of the fishing harbour will serve as a big boost to the Elmina community as well as contributing immensely to the reduction of Ghana's unemployment rate as the fishing sector contributes about 11% of the agricultural sector's annual GDP and employs about 20% of the country's workforce directly and indirectly.
The Transport Minister, Hon. Kweku Ofori Asiamah called on the media to help in educating the people of Elmina to adhere proper maintenance culture on the fishing harbour to benefit generations yet unborn.
Mr. Ebenezer Afadzi, Director for the Western and Central Regions Port and Harbour on the operationalization of the Elmina fishing harbour disclosed that the Authority currently has the services of only four individuals managing the project but will in no time open up for recruitment to subsequently kick start operations.
He promised that the Authority will never forgo the citizenry of Elmina in its recruitment of personnel to work at the harbour.
Meanwhile, the Transport Minister has given the Ghana Ports and Harbourt Authority (GPHA) a two-week ultimatum to see to it that operations at the harbour commences.
