The Director of Campaign Communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that selecting the Vice President as the flagbearer for the NPP would help remove the 'Akan Party' label from the party.
Speaking with Sompa News, Nana Akomea emphasized that the NPP has always embraced inclusivity and welcomed people from various backgrounds. However, due to opposition branding them as the 'Akan Party', they have struggled to distance themselves from this label.
"NPP has been burdened with a certain branding imposed by our opponents. Every election cycle, this branding resurfaces. The label suggests that the party is dominated by the Akan ethnicity and non-Akans can't lead. With Dr. Bawumia, we have a great opportunity to counter this perception," he explained.
The former Minister of Employment highlighted that this move would also counteract the propaganda spread by opposition parties, who have used the 'Akan party' label as a campaign tool against the NPP.
Nana Akomea added that apart from Dr. Bawumia's evident talent and goal-oriented nature, party delegates are also interested in candidates who can secure electoral victory.
"Now, we have a candidate like Dr. Bawumia, who can reshape our image to be more inclusive and debunk the NDC's propaganda. We possess the means to change this narrative, and that is Dr. Bawumia," he emphasized.
He also noted that this strategy would help gain support in regions where the 'Akan party' label has negatively impacted NPP's performance in elections. Nana Akomea pointed out that Dr. Bawumia has played a significant role in weakening the NDC's stronghold in the Northern Region.
"Before his involvement, we struggled to secure votes from that region. By presenting him as a presidential candidate, he has the potential to further diminish the Northern region as a major NDC stronghold," Nana Akomea observed.
Additionally, Nana Akomea highlighted Dr. Bawumia's track record of capability and contribution to the NPP and Ghana. From his representation in the 2012 election hearings to his involvement in policy implementation as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated his competence.
Dr. Bawumia is one of the 10 candidates competing in the New Patriotic Party's presidential primaries. The aspirants vying to lead the party into the 2024 general elections will participate in a special delegates conference this weekend.
The conference's objective is to reduce the number of aspirants from 10 to 5 before the national conference scheduled for November.
The special delegates conference is scheduled for Saturday, August 26.
