Flagbearer aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has officially withdrawn from the impending run-off against his rival Francis Addai-Nimoh, which was slated for Saturday, September 2, 2023.
In the initial round of voting that transpired on Saturday, August 26, both Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko secured an equal count of nine votes each, equating to a mere 0.98% of the total votes. This outcome necessitated a run-off between the two contenders, aimed at narrowing down the original pool of 10 candidates to a final roster of five.
Despite the party's initial directive for all members of the Electoral College to participate in the voting process to determine one candidate out of the remaining five, the party leadership has executed an unexpected reversal by restricting the Electoral College to comprise only 135 National Council members.
Mr. Agyarko has vigorously opposed this decision, citing its violation of the party's constitutional principles.
As a result of what he deems an unconstitutional act, he has made the resolute decision to withdraw from the run-off race.
Mr. Agyarko firmly believes that the party's unexpected and unprecedented alteration of the electoral process undermines the integrity of the internal democratic procedures.
Consequently, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has officially communicated his withdrawal from the run-off election in a statement, expressing his reluctance to partake in a contest that he perceives as marked by a lack of adherence to established party regulations.
