Hon Kwadwo Agyei Darko, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development in the erstwhile John Agyekum Kuffour administration, has stated that the actions of some leadership and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing the grounds for disunity and apathy ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The former member of Parliament for Sunyani West constituency of the then Brong Ahafo region also described the decision by some members of the ruling NPP to openly declare support for aspirants as unconstitutional.
He explained, it is enshrined in the party's constitution that members holding executive positions are to desist from openly declaring their support for candidates contesting for positions.
He was speaking in an interview with Nana Kwame Owusu Nkwantabisa, host of Sompa Ade Akyea Abiaa show in Sunyani when reacting to the withdrawal of Mr. Alan Kyeremanteng from the NPP's Presidential primaries.
Hon Agyei Darko said the issues raised by Mr Kyeremanteng in his withdrawal statement, if left unresolved, could lead to apathy among the party members and could hinder their chances in the 2024 general elections.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, one of the flagbearer hopefuls of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has withdrawn from the race.
He made the announcement in a statement dated September 5, 2023.
“In light of the foregoing, I wish to confirm that I am honourably withdrawing from the process that will lead to the Presidential Primaries to be held on the 4th of November 2023. In the next upcoming weeks, I will provide an indication of the role that I will play in politics in Ghana, after consultations with my family and other well-wishers, various stakeholders and interest groups,” he added.
