A former deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Alex Kyeremeh has accused the Nana Akuffo – Addo led administration of sinking the country’s education to the extent that it was no longer subscribing to the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination prestigiously supervised by the management of the West Africa Examination Council.
He has therefore claimed that the country’s education is currently in tatters since the Ministry of education under this government was implementing its own examination version he referred to as Ghana Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (GHASSSCE) adding that the current examination was supervised internally by the country’s examiners. He indicated that the government can go on to tickle itself of the education success made but entreated Ghanaians to disregard the recent reports on education as read by the government during the 61st Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools in the country
President Nana Akufo-Addo addressing the 61st Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), on Wednesday, 11th October 2023, President Akufo-Addo said, in the face of brute resistance from naysayers, this vindication, based on results, means, “there can no longer be any controversy about the validity of the Free SHS policy and its consequential measures.”
According to President Akufo-Addo, “Quality, despite the increased enrolment figures, which, as I have said, now stands at some 1.4 million students, has not declined. On the contrary, it has improved, and I want to use this opportunity to thank you warmly, members of CHASS, for the impressive results seen in the West African Senior High School examinations, since the commencement of the Free SHS policy in September 2017”, the President said. He continued, “The 2022 WASSCE results of the third batch of the “Akufo-Addo graduates” shows 60.39% of students recording A1-C6 in English, as opposed to 51.6% in 2016; 62.45% recording A1-C6 in Integrated Science in 2022, as opposed to 48.35% in 2016, with the 2022 result being a slight regression from the 2021 pass rate of 65.70%; 61.39% recording A1-C6 in Mathematics, as compared to 33.12% in 2016; and 71.51% recording A1-C6 in Social Studies, as compared to 54.55% in 2016.”
But referring and speaking to SOMPA NEWS on 12TH October, 2023, to a recent statement issued by the University of Ghana, Hon. Alex Kyeremeh said that it should be worrisome to every Ghanaian the trend of the education since most of the students who scored A1s on GHASSSCE could not get a GPA of more than One hence their looming dismissal.
He maintained the NDC government from 2013 to 2016 topped the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination involving Nigeria and other West African countries under supervised by WAEC, insisting there no need for the President to make noise on his self-introduced GHASSSCE which was not recognized outside the shores of Ghana.
