Running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has donated assorted food items to the Cape Coast Central Mosque in the Central Region to aid Muslims within the catchment area observe a pleasant fast in this year's Ramadan eve.
The donation appears an annual ritual performed by the NDC running mate to offer assistance to Muslims within the region during their holy month of fasting and not a one-off event.
Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang's benevolent gesture which has sparked wide commendations, is often done not only in kind but in cash as well.
The word Ramadan, derived from the Arabic root 'ramida' or 'ar-ramad', which means ‘scorching heat’ is a month of healing and a period of communal harmony, reflection, and spiritual quest while mandatorily fasting from dawn to dusk with intense recitations of the holy Quran and ignition of compassion through acts of charity.
Items donated by Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to the Cape Coast Central Mosque include, bags of beans, maize, and millet, 100 bags of sugar, 50 packs of water, 14 boxes of lipton, baskets of oranges, watermelons, and pineapples as well as 100 sachets of water.
The donation witnessed personalities like the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South Constituency, Hon. George Ricketts-Hagan, Imam Iddi Rashid Tijani, the Central Regional Chief Imam, Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, the Central Regional NDC Chairman, the Formidable Powers group of the NDC, and the entire NDC Executives of the Central Region.
Addressing the Central Regional Zongo Chief and his subjects at the mosque, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang assured to see to it if she can replicate the same act of kindness to the mosque at the end of the fasting.
She humbly required of the Central Regional Chief Imam and the entire Muslim community to pray for peace and unity for Ghana prior to the country's general election slated for December 7.
Alhaji Mahmudu Dende, the Region's Zongo Chief (Sarki Zongo) asserted to the fact that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang since 1992, during her time with the University of Cape Coast has been donating to the Muslim community and has never for once relinquish on her constant visit and donations to the Muslim community during Ramadan seasons.
As usually presumed to last for 29 or 30 days depending on the moon sighting, Ramadan this year having commenced on Monday, March 11, will end around April 9, 2024, with the celebratory days of Eid al-Fitr estimated to start around 10th April.
