President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo has been challenged to sign the anti LGBTQ bill within one month if he is not in support of their activities.
Mr Bernard Oduro Takyi, (B.O.T) a certified chartered economist and a Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who dared the President indicated that, he would resign from active politics if the President is able to append his signature to the bill.
He explained, the President prioritizes money from foreign donors to the neglect of the protection of the Ghanaian culture and values.
On February 28, 2024, Parliament of Ghana passed a bill criminalizing LGBTQ+ activities, including their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
Convicted individuals could face imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those found guilty of promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years.
President Akufo-Addo, during a meeting with members of the diplomatic community, stated that he would await the Supreme Court ruling on the bill before making a decision.
Earlier, the Finance Ministry had advised President Akufo-Addo against endorsing the controversial bill, citing potential repercussions on international financial support.
The bill, designed to impose sanctions on individuals identifying as LGBTQ+ and those promoting such, has sparked considerable debate.
“I am urging the clergy, the Christian Council, the Islamic Council and the traditional worshippers to take very key note of this; that the December polls is a vote to decide for or against the legalization of the activities of gay and lesbianism in Ghana. If you vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) again the anti LGBTQ bill would remained unsigned”, he stressed.
Speaking on Me Man Nti Political show on Sompa 98.9FM in Sunyani last Saturday April 27, the outspoken NDC national communication member said the former President Mahama would sign the bill exactly three months in office if he is voted for come December 7.
“If you vote for John Mahama who has boldly declared his stance that his religious believes frowns on the act, I can assure you that he will assent to the bill exactly three months into office.”
