Mr. Maxwell Mahama, a former NPP communication officer for Sunyani East constituency of the Bono region has expressed concerns over the recent decision by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The Speaker of Parliament, yesterday approved a motion that called for four Members of Parliament (MPs) to vacate their seats.
The motion was filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and argued that the MPs, who are seeking to contest the upcoming December elections as independent candidates, must relinquish their parliamentary positions as outlined in the constitutional provisions governing parliamentary membership.
The MPs affected by this decision are Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).
But Mr Mahama in a write-up blamed the NPP for causing their own woes.
Below is the full write-up
The New Patriotic Party had a clear, glaring, and golden opportunity to have elected Professor Rev. Aron Mike Oquaye, as the speaker of Parliament on the 7th day of January 2021.
The NPP had 137 seats, and the NDC had 137 seats. The Independent Candidate magnanimously joined the NPP, and the NPP formed the Majority Caucus in Parliament.
During the elections between Prof. Oquaye(NPP) and Bagbin (NDC), Prof. Oquaye had 136 votes, and Mr. Bagbin had 137 votes, and 1 vote was rejected.
Therefore, Bagbin became the Speaker on the ticket of the NDC.
In fact, the NPP Caucus broke down since that day, and there was no unity to be found in the NPP.
Unfortunately, there was no attempt by the NPP to have found out who the two most notorious wicked MPs were.
The Independent Candidate at Fomena, who was maligned, hooted at, denigrated, or disparaged and unfairly treated, became the saviour to the NPP to form the Majority Caucus.
Recently, there were internal Party reorganisation towards the upcoming General Elections, a lot of rot happened, there was/is or no attempt by the Party to bring any proper reconciliation and now, two of our MP's have broken away giving us a disgraceful turn of events in Parliament.
This unpalatable situation yesterday has never happened since the 4th Republic of Ghana.
It is a shame, bad precedent, and an insult to the intelligence of the Party as an organisation.
The only solution we have as a Party is to find out the two MP's who voted against Prof. MIKE OQUAYE that has brought us this shame.
Secondly, we should focus on our Campaign so that we shall not be thwarted.
Thirdly, we should find an amicable way to quickly reconcile the two MP's into our camp to succeed.
Finally, we should desist from that syndrome ." If he/she wants to go, let him go ."
Thank you.
