John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has confirmed receiving a congratulatory call from his rival, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his decisive victory in Ghana's December 7 elections.
In a post on X, Sunday, 8 December 2024, Mr Mahama said: “I have, this morning, received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election.”
Dr Bawumia conceded defeat in a press conference, where he acknowledged Mr Mahama's lead in the polls and congratulated him as Ghana’s President-elect.
“I have just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr Bawumia revealed during the press conference.
“The people of Ghana have spoken; the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
Dr Bawumia explained that his concession was motivated by a desire to preserve national peace and unity, saying: “My concession speech ahead of the EC’s official announcement is to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country.”
He also acknowledged the NDC's parliamentary victory, which secures the party a majority in the next Parliament.
“Former President Mahama and the NDC have won the presidential election decisively, while the NDC has also won the parliamentary election, although they are still waiting for the final collation,” he added.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is, however, yet to officially declare the winner of Saturday’s polls and the President-elect of the country.
