The Concerned Members of the Disability Desk of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on on H.E. John Dramani Mahama to honor his 2024 campaign promise of including Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in key government positions.
This reminder, according to the group underscores his commitment to fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, particularly PwDs, within his administration.
The group in a statement signed by Genevieve Ama Kujem, a member and copied to Sompa FM said, "During the 2024 campaign, H.E. Mahama made significant pledges to empower PWDs, emphasizing their essential role in national development."
The promises, she said include:
- Free Tertiary Education for PWDs: Removing financial barriers to ensure equitable access to higher education for persons with disabilities.
- Review of the Disability Act: Amending and improving the Disability Act to better address the evolving needs and rights of PWDs.
- Employment Quota for PWDs: Establishing a minimum of 5% employment opportunities for PWDs in both public and private sectors, including leadership roles.
- Representation in Governance: Appointing PWDs as Ambassadors, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive Officers (MMDCEs), Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Board Members, Board Directors, Presidential Staffers, Agency heads and key positions to ensure their voices are heard at decision-making levels.
“The concerned members of the NDC Disability Desk commends these commitments and emphasizes the importance of translating them into tangible actions. Inclusive leadership is essential to building a just society and achieving sustainable development. to leadership roles, H.E. Mahama will not only honor his promises but also demonstrate Ghana's progress toward equality and social justice.”
The team highlighted the capabilities and achievements of PWDs, noting their significant contributions in professional, political, and entrepreneurial spheres. Many qualified PWDs possess the skills, expertise, and leadership qualities required to serve in ministerial, managerial, and other key capacities.
“Inclusion is not just a moral obligation; it is a fundamental component of effective governance. Diverse perspectives at decision-making tables lead to more innovative and representative policies. The concerned members of the Disability Desk are confident that H.E. Mahama will fulfill his pledge to ensure PWDs play a meaningful role in shaping the nation's future”, the statement stressed.
“As H.E. Mahama has started forming his government, we the concerned members of the Disability Desk urge him to fulfill his promise to persons with disabilities. Doing so will solidify his legacy as a leader committed to inclusivity, equity, and national cohesion.”
