The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a five-member committee to investigate the flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage in September 2023.
The committee chaired by Kirk Koffi, will examine the events leading to the spillage and assess the response to the flooding.
The committee's tasks include identifying affected areas, evaluating strategies used to address the impact, and recommending measures for both immediate and long-term solutions.
In his remarks at the inauguration in Accra on Thursday, Mr Jonapor stated that the committee has one month to complete its work.
He noted that it was important to receive a coordinated response to effectively mitigate the effects of the flooding on those affected.
“If there ought to be compensation, how does the Government go about it?” The Minister quizzed.
He suggested the need for sustainable planning and flood management strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Minister called on key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts, to offer the committee relevant information on the flooding to aid its work.
The Chairman of the committee, Kirk Koffi, thanked the Minister for the opportunity to undertake such an important exercise and assured that the committee would deliver on their mandate.
Other committee members include Mr Kwame Jantuah, Kofi Ellis, Kwaku Akosa and Ms Georgette Emefa Fugah, Esq. (secretary).
