Member of Parliament for Sunyani West constituency of the Bono region, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwaa has described as unfortunate the tragic loss of Yaw Francis, also known as Pooley, a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter.
The unfortunate incident occurred after violent clashes erupted following the Ghana Premier League Matchday 19 encounter between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park.
The game, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Kotoko, was overshadowed by heated confrontations both on and off the pitch. Tensions escalated when players from both sides clashed, prompting the referee to issue four red cards. The situation spiralled further out of control after the final whistle, resulting in violent scenes between rival supporters.
"As the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, I strongly condemn the violence that led to this unfortunate incident. I will work closely with the Bono Regional Minister and security forces to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law", Hon. Amankwaa Yeboah said in a statement made available to Sompa FM.
She indicated that, "Football is a sport that unites us, and it is unacceptable that such a tragedy has occurred."
She urged the Ghana Football Association to take immediate action to review and strengthen security protocols at all match venues to prevent such incidents from happening again.
The MP expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, friends, and the entire football community.
"Let us come together to promote peace, safety, and sportsmanship in our beloved sport."
