Former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Obiri Boahen Esq’ has said the NPP early congress is dependent upon the contingent of aspirants contesting for the flagbearership which will also determine whether to have a special congress or not.
His comment was in reaction to the delaying of the New Patriotic Party’s congress after the NEC meeting over the date for primaries ended in deadlock.
When asked by Omanhene Yaw Adu Boakye on Sompa Tv on Friday, the lawyer said, it's likely the NPP will have a special congress which also means there will be two sessions of Congress “the special congress and the main congress”.
Given further details about the NPP Constitution governing the congress, he said if there will be two sessions of Congress then the special congress should come first before the main congress.
He based his argument on the number of aspirants who have declared their stance to contest for the NPP flagbearership slot.
“If the numbers will exceed 5, the constitution will determine what to do either for early congress or no early congress” will be based on the contingent of aspirants, the possibility of having more than 5 aspirants is very high’ what it means is that you cannot have one congress, you must have two’ the special congress and the main congress, and you can't have two congresses in December, the special Congress must come first before the main one” he explained.
He said the special congress will consist of the branch executive, constituency, council of elders, and founders.
“It falls in line with the party's Constitution when the branch, constituency, the council of elders, and founders have their super congress before the main congress” he added.
