The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has told the Minority in Parliament not to approve President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s new ministerial nominees according to a press statement by the general secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey
The Deputy National Communications Officer of NDC Mr. Godwin Ako Gunn in an interview with Sompa News said the current economic hardship in the country does not need any more ministers, especially at this moment of haircuts, the most important thing the government can do is to do a “governmental haircut” to slash off the number of ministers instead.
According to Ako Gunn, the directive to the minority in parliament by the party leadership, is strongly aligns with the genuine sentiments of most Ghanaians who are bitterly complaining of hardship.
The leadership of the NDC, has, against this backdrop, directed the Minority caucus in Parliament NOT to approve any of the new ministerial nominees and to further push for a reduction in the size of government to reduce the needless drain on scarce public resources.
He continues to say that the decision by the party is not to say that the individuals appointed for the various portfolios are blemish but rather are based on the revival and stability of the economy.
“We are not saying the appointed ministers designate for the positions are at fault, but the economic challenges we are currently facing, there are some ministers who are sitting idly because there is no money allocated to their ministry to work because there is no money”.
According to him, it’s time to merge some ministries to cut costs.
“Ministry of special initiative can be merged with the ministry of the ministry of trade and industry, likewise ministry of railways with the ministry of transport, aviation with Agriculture so you could get money to pay pensioners,” he said.
